IMIS ties up with RAI for Retail Course

Institute of Management & Information Science (IMIS), Bhubaneswar has tied up with Retailer Association of India (RAI) to launch its 1st Post Graduate Programme in Retail Management (PGPRM).

In the 1st year PGPRM at IMIS would be having 120 students with a course fee of Rs. 2.6 Lakh per annum. IMIS’s current student strength is around 700. According to Prof (Dr.) K.C. Padhy, Director, IMIS, the strength would increase to 840 next year.

PGPRM is 18 months course of full-time teaching including an internship of six months at an organized retail outlet anywhere in the world. The course has theoretical information and practical exposure. Students from 11 states have joined the course.

According to IMIS authorities, the aim of the programme is to impart education to suit retail requirements in the nation and abroad. Keeping in mind the demand for retail personnel in the coming years, IMIS has launched this programme.

Estimates and survey suggest that retail in India would be requiring 2.2. million trained personnel within the next3-4 years. The Indian retail market would be around $300 billion by 2010.

Speaking at the launch of IMIS PGPRM Gibson G. Vedamani, CEO, RAI said, students in this faculty need to develop conceptualization skills, doggedly work for customer satisfaction and derive experience from the shop floor mechanism. Said he, “these are the three bulwarks of becoming a successful retail manager in future years”.

According to Vedamani, a successful retail manager needs to put all his thoughts together while analysizing business around him with a positive sectoral focus and an all round view. These, to Vedamani are the key to success in retail management.

Says he,” if one has to climb up the career hierarchy in retail, he would have to take the risk of attaining glory, using the opportunities that are being created with the every day growth in the retail sector”.

N.V.R. Nathani, vice-president, Infrastructure leasing and financial services (II &FS) pointed out that retail, currently, was a new learning and a new challenge as well. Says Nathani, ”one has to imbibe the level of confidence and also be a good negotiator to stand out as a quality retail manager.

Speaking on the occasion Upamanyu Bhattacharya, CEO, Trumart said, retail was the intersection point between the buyer and seller. According to Upamanyu, “those joining retail with the intention of earning the ‘glamour’ of the profession is wrong and should stand apart. It is a different ball game where one has to look at the customer and know the learning curves of convergence of different departments from HR to marketing.”

Upamanyu feels, everything about retail “emanates from the retail floor”, the real training ground fro the students, where one learns about the customer’s mind. He also spoke on the concept of ‘people’s management’-a vital mainstay of retail. Ashish J.sanyal, CEO, AMP Retail, Abel Correa, Country Manager-India JDA Software India Pvt. Ltd. And T. K. Panda, Professor, IIM Indore also spoke on the occasion.

New Course

Inaugurating the course, Mr. G. Vedamani, CEO, Retailers Association of India said that the students opting for the programme should imbible in themselves conceptual and analytical skills and added that there is an immense scope for the students to do well in this sector provided they develop an eye for devil.

City based institute of management & information science (IMIS) will now teach retail management programme.

Experts See A Retail Varsity Coming Up

Is the country heading towards having its first retail university? If the boom in the retail sector is any indication, it might well be a reality soon.

The idea was floated much to the excitement of retail guru at launch of institute of management & information science (IMIS)'s PG programme in retail management here on Wednesday". The idea has just popped up. We have to study it in detail and think over it, but we are quite optimistic about the concept," said chief executive of retail association of India Gibson G. Vedamani while talking to media persons on the sidelines of the launching ceremony.

The fact is that the exploding growth of the sector has created a gauge demand for retail managers which educational institutes are just waking up to. While estimate suggests that about 2.2 million people would be required in the next four years, only a handful of institutes in the country offer quality programmes in the retail management today. If such a university takes shape, it would not only benefit aspirants but help the sector achieve  sustained growth and innovation.

According to McKinsey & Company and CII, the Indian retail market holds the potential of  becoming a $300-billion per year market by 2010.The courses designed by IMIS will prepare students who can match the industry requirement and take the retail success story to a new level. Experts like CEO of Trumart Upamanyu Bhattacharya, CEO of AMP Retail Services Ashish J. Sanyal, country manager of JDA software India Abel Correa, vice president of IL & FS N.V.R. Nathan and Vedamani himself have invested their mind and experience in devising the course curriculum.

Success mantra: The speakers underlined certain attributes which students must adopt to excel in this sector. Bhattacharya for instance called upon the students to devote mote time right on the retail floor to gauge the taste and aspirations of the consumers". Devote at least first three years in learning. Understand your customers and talk to them," he exhorted.

Vedamani laid stress on developing conceptual and analytical skills". The job calls for lot of time investment and you have to forget your pleasure and travel extra mile to be successful," he said.

In all, 130 students from 11 states have taken admission in the first batch. A six-month internship constitutes a vital element of the programme in which students will work in leading chains to gain hands-on experience.

Institute chairman Dr. K.K. Beuria, secretary H.K. Patnaik, Director K.C. Padhy, Coordinator Prof. S. Panda and others attended the function.
